Connect 4 looks like a kids' game. Seven columns, six rows, drop a disc, connect four. How hard can it be?
Then you play against someone who actually knows what they're doing and lose 12 matches in a row without seeing what hit you.
Here's the thing: Connect 4 is a solved game. The first player can force a win with perfect play. But perfect play requires memorizing an enormous decision tree — nobody actually does that in real matches. What wins real games is knowing 3-4 reliable patterns and spotting them before your opponent does.
This article gives you those patterns. Learn them, apply them, and you'll beat most players you face on SkillClash.
Before we get to forks, let's establish the foundation.
The center column (column 4) participates in more winning lines than any other column. This is not a small edge — it's the entire opening theory of Connect 4.
Count the winning lines that pass through each square on an empty board:
If you're going first, play the center. Always. If your opponent goes first and takes the center, take column 3 or 5 — the next strongest column.
Only deviate from this rule if your opponent has a specific immediate threat that requires blocking. Otherwise, center first.
Every fork you'll learn below is easier to build from the center column than from the edges. A player who controls the center controls the game.
This is the single most important technique in Connect 4. If you master only one strategy, master this.
A two-way fork is a move that creates two winning threats at once. Your opponent can only block one. You win on your next turn.
Imagine you have discs at:
Row 1: . . . X . . . Row 2: . . . X . . . Row 3: . . . X . . .
You're one move away from winning vertically in column 4. But your opponent sees this and will block the top of column 4 on their turn.
Now imagine you also have discs at:
Row 1: . . . X . . . Row 2: . . . X . . . Row 3: . . . X X X . ← three in a row horizontally
Now you have two threats at once: - Win vertically by dropping in column 4 - Win horizontally by dropping in column 7
Your opponent can only block one. You play the other. Game over.
Build your discs so they form two potential lines that intersect at an empty square. When you fill that square, both lines become live threats.
The most common fork setups happen on row 3 (the middle row) because discs can be stacked from below without blocking the top of the fork.
Most beginners only look for horizontal and vertical lines. They lose to diagonals every single game.
Diagonals are harder to see because they require spatial reasoning. But they're also harder for your opponent to defend against — they often don't notice a diagonal forming until it's already a threat.
The trick is to build the diagonal in a staircase pattern that lets you drop into the critical slot:
Row 1: . . . . . . . Row 2: . . X . . . . Row 3: . . . X . . . Row 4: . . . . X . . Row 5: . . . . . X . Row 6: . . . . . . .
You have four in a diagonal — but they're stacked. You need to make sure your fourth disc is on top of a column that hasn't been filled above it.
The most reliable diagonal setups happen in the middle of the board where the drop path is clear.
This is an intermediate technique. Once you know it, you'll see opportunities in every game.
Instead of building a fork directly, create a single threat that forces your opponent to block a specific square. Their forced response opens up a fork for you on the next move.
You have:
Row 1: . . X X . . . Row 2: . . . . . . .
You play column 2 to make it Row 1: . X X X . . . — three in a row with open ends at column 1 and column 5.
Your opponent must block one end. They'll typically block the more obvious one (usually column 5, the top of a stack).
Now you play column 1 to make it Row 1: X X X X . . . — you win.
But wait — they blocked column 5, not column 1. So why did you win?
Because you anticipated the block and set up your board so that either column 1 or column 5 leads to a fork. When they blocked column 5, you played column 1 and now have a fork creating two more threats. Their block didn't save them — it just delayed the fork.
This is a beginner mistake, but I'm listing it because 90% of players still do it.
If your opponent has a disc in column 3, dropping your disc into column 3 builds their stack, not yours.
When you play into a column that already has their discs, you're: - Making their existing stack taller (helps them) - Wasting a turn that could build your own structure - Giving them a free "safe" column to attack later
Play to the sides. Play away from their strongest column. Force them to come to you.
Exception: If dropping under their disc blocks a winning line, do it. Blocking is worth building their stack.
The single biggest reason intermediate players lose: they only scan the direction they're planning to attack.
Before every move, scan:
If any of 1-4 has a threat, block it. If they have two threats (a fork), you've already lost — but you should still block the more threatening one and hope for a mistake.
Doing this scan takes 5 seconds. It will save you more matches than any other habit.
Before you place a disc, ask yourself: "After I drop this, can my opponent drop in any column to create a fork?" If the answer is yes, pick a different move.
In order of how often they cause losses:
You now know 5 strategies. But knowing them isn't enough — you need to build the pattern recognition that lets you see forks before they happen.
The only way to build that recognition is repetition. Play 20 matches. Notice the forks you miss. Play 20 more. Notice you're now seeing some of them. Play 100 more. Now you're seeing them before your opponent does.
